Developer VPS guide

Use a VPS when the application needs control, isolation and a repeatable deployment path.

Root access is valuable only when configuration, patching, monitoring and recovery are treated as part of the product.

Make an evidence-led choice

Build around the workload

A VPS can run APIs, containers, staging environments, databases, automation workers and custom application stacks. KVM virtualisation isolates allocated resources, while root access allows operating-system and service configuration. That flexibility also transfers operational responsibility to the customer unless a managed service is explicitly included.

✓

Repeatable deployment

Use version control, environment-specific secrets and scripted deployment rather than manual server changes.

✓

Observable services

Monitor availability, latency, disk, memory and certificate expiry before users report failures.

✓

Recoverable architecture

Take off-server backups and rehearse restoration; a snapshot alone is not a recovery plan.

Checklist

Production-readiness checklist

  • Use SSH keys and restrict privileged access.
  • Patch the operating system and exposed services.
  • Configure a firewall and rate limits appropriate to the application.
  • Separate secrets from source code and rotate compromised credentials.
  • Document deployment, rollback and recovery procedures.

Before you order

Confirm the service boundary.

Plan names do not guarantee management, backups, migration or application support. Review the published specification and terms, and ask HostUrServer about any workload-specific requirement before purchase.
